Taxis first made their way to Calcutta’s streets back in 1908, when the fare was just 8 anna per mile. The iconic yellow ambassadors made an appearance in 1958. Since then, they’ve been known as the ‘King of Roads’ due to their reliability and perseverance.
As the years went on, the black taxis started reducing in numbers, and eventually, only the yellow taxis were left. While these taxis are iconic and hold a special place in the city’s history, their numbers are sadly dwindling.
